My "to see" list

This list is a work in progress. I will add director/year/imdb link for all the titles. As I haven't watched these yet, I can't say if they're any good. Some of the trailers are available on the IMDB links.
To other movie bloggers out there in cyberspace, feel free to review any of the films on this list, it would be cool if you did!

Would be great, if you suggest more films I might like in the comments...

  1. forget about parnassus. it's unbearable.

do watch "leaves of grass" as soon as you can. i liked it a lot.

i have yet to see many of the films you listed there...

  2. I'll have to watch Leaves of grass, then ( ;

Edward Norton is one of my favorite actors. I also want to see him in "Down in the valley"

  3. I just watched Leaves of Grass (review going up in a couple of weeks) and enjoyed it. A Coen-esque delight :-)

btw, thanks for the link. I appreciate it a lot!

  4. Parnassus was fantastic! If you were interested in it to begin with, don't let one naysayer dissuade you. Every movie has someone who dislikes it...

Lots of good picks here, both ones I've seen and haven't. One suggestion: I noticed you have Holiday (1938) on your list. It's a decent film, but to me it seems like kind of a dress rehearsal for The Philadelphia Story (1940), which reunited the stars, director and writer two years later (plus Jimmy Stewart!) to even greater results. Catch them both, or if you're forced to choose, go with the latter - funny, witty, romantic and just impeccable. One of my all-time favorites.

Also, I see you're trying to get into Chaplin - my personal fave is Modern Times (1936).

  5. Look likes Parnassus is a love it or hate it kind of experience judging from these comments, haven't seen it.

'Leaves of grass' was not to my liking, but Norton's acting was good. I agree with rottentomatoes on that one.

Will add Philadelphia Story + Modern Times, thanks for telling ( :

  6. Skip Berlin Alexanderplatz. That's 16 and 1/2 hours you will never get back. It's not bad, but it isn't worth 16 and a 1/2 hours, trust me. See Ali: Fear Eats The Soul instead. It's Fassbinder's finest.

Skip The Mother And The Whore. If you want a good long French film from the 70's then see Celine And Julie Go Boating.

You have to see all three parts of The Human Condition. Just watching the first part doesn't work. It's really one film cut into three parts.

I could go on and on, but that's enough for now.

  7. @ Jump_Raven

Thanks for the follow and the film recommendations/warnings. I'll check out the trailers for those.
Fassbinders finest film I feel is very subjective, my favourite so far being "The Marriage of Maria Braun"

Besides Character( 1997), if you're into Dutch cinema, I can see on your blog you haven't reviewed The Vanishing (1988) directed by George Sluizer- It's in "1001 movies to see before you die". Really haunting, I thought it was much better than the US remake.

Will follow your blog, love blogs where you know immediately if the writer is recommending ( :

  8. Actually, The Vanishing was one of the first Dutch films I watched. I just didn't review it.

Speaking of Dutch films. You might take a look at I Love Dollars by Johan van der Keuken. It's like a prototype for Michael Moore's films only far, far, far more heavy handed. It's pretty bad, but funny bad.

  9. I have not seen hardly anything on this list!

"You, the Living" ("Du Levande") is excellent, though. If you like Roy Andersson's style, I would recommend watching his other features but also his shorts (and even his commercials). They're all very... "chilling," in the best way possible.

Also, if "single take scenes in Swedish" is something you enjoy, check out "De ofrivilliga" ("Involuntary") by Ruben Östlund. I really really liked it (but no one else in the theatre seemed to, so who knows).

Another excellent Scandinavian filmmaker: Finland's Aki Kaurismäki. His "The Man Without a Past" is really popular but definitely not my favourite -- I absolutely adore his proletariat trilogy ("Shadows in Paradise," "Ariel," and "The Match Factory Girl"). His films are silly but tragic and beautiful and "Ariel" is one of my favourites ever. I recommend not reading a description of it, though - I didn't before I saw it - as the ones I've seen give away most of the plot, and the surprise at where this story ends up is a lot of its charm. Yay, Finland!

  10. @Erin:

I'll look into those suggestions, thanks.I like some Scandinavian films.

By the way, you can do a CTRL+F search, by country, on my blog. As I've added country to each foreign language recommendation on the A-Z list.

  11. Hangover 2 is definitely worth a watch, even though it's pretty much a copy of the first one.

And, of course, I can only recommend Dil Chahta Hai :)

    ReplyDelete
  12. Lime(tte) : Yep, sequels are seldom as original.
I heard Dil Chahta Hai was one of the best bollywood films(I don't normally watch that genre). Very long film, so don't know when I'll watch.

  13. There are a lot of movies you want to watch. But I think if I made a list there would be a ton too. Melancholia seems interesting, haven't watched Hangover II.
There are many 'treasures' (I say treasures because they are a great piece of art) to be discovered! :)

    ReplyDelete
  14. @Andina : We don't know if movies are treasures unless we give them a chance, like meeting new people ( :
